The Western Roads Upgrade is using the latest technology to transform roads in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The laser car uses mobile laser scanning to map the existing road network.

Whilst driving, the laser car plots the road and surrounding landscape, capturing details as small as 15mm.

The cutting-edge technology improves efficiency and avoids the disruption of traditional methods such as closing lanes and reducing speeds that are usually needed when using large surveying equipment.

The data will be used to help deliver eight road upgrades, improve 37 roads between now and 2021, and maintain 260kms of road between Footscray and Werribee over the next 20 years.
