Milestone celebration for Thompsons Road
It was celebrations all around on Sunday 2 June after completion of major construction activities on Thompsons Road.
New lanes on Thompsons Road between Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road are now open, completing the full stretch of 10.7km of new road on Thompsons Road between Dandenong-Frankston Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road.
Around 1000 people braved the cold to attend a community event to mark the occasion with families enjoying activities such as a jumping castle, petting zoo, face painting, roving band and more.
It’s an exciting time as this marks the end of major works on the Thompsons Road Upgrade, and bookends a massive 30-month effort involving:
- Over 600,000 hours of labour
- Approximately 40,000 tonnes of asphalt
- 4000 cubic metres of concrete to build the twin bridges.
While this milestone marks the completion of all major construction, we will still need to do some finishing works including landscaping and final surfacing. These will require occasional lane closures until the end of 2019.
Work to upgrade the Dandenong-Frankston Road/Thompsons Road roundabout to traffic lights will begin soon. This is due for completion in early 2020.
Watch the video below to see how the upgrade came together or visit the Thompsons Road Upgrade project page for more information.
