New designs for Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade

26 February, 2020Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade

We're upgrading Fitzsimons Lane to make it easier and safer to get you where you need to be.

The Fitzsimons Lane project is part of the Northern Roads Upgrade package and will improve four intersections in Eltham and Templestowe.

The new design of the Fitzsimons Lane and Main Road intersection balances safety benefits for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians using the intersection, and has been informed by traffic modelling as well as factoring in community feedback about the local importance of the ‘Eltham Gateway’.

Updates to the design includes the removal of two traffic lanes from the Eltham approach and dedicated bus queue-jump lanes – delivering improvements during heavy traffic periods, including peak times, community events and emergency evacuations.

Fitzsimons Lane is a major thoroughfare that connects Melbourne’s northern suburbs with the city and eastern suburbs and is used by more than 60,000 vehicles every day – and during the morning peak, traffic queues build up to 1.5 kilometres long, causing significant delays through the area.

As a green wedge suburb, Eltham is subject to bushfire risk and this was an important consideration when the design was developed.

The upgrade will feature safe pedestrian crossing points and upgraded walking and cycling paths to provide safer connections between businesses, schools and homes..
