Funding secured for Stage 2 of the Monash Freeway Upgrade

4 September, 2019Monash Freeway Upgrade

Stage 2 of the Monash Freeway Upgrade is another step closer to getting underway, with funding secured from the Victorian and Australian Governments.

The project upgrades the Monash and Princes Freeways between Warrigal Road, Chadstone and Cardinia Road, Pakenham. It will add 36 kms of new lanes on the Monash and Princes Freeways, between:

  • Warrigal Road and Eastlink outbound
  • Eastlink to Springvale Road inbound
  • Clyde Road to Cardinia Road, in both directions.

It will also:

  • reconnect Police Road to the Monash freeway with an outbound on-ramp
  • connect the Jacksons Road outbound ramp directly to Eastlink with a separate road
  • add two extra lanes in each direction on O’Shea Road between Clyde Road and Soldiers Road
  • upgrade the Beaconsfield interchange to widen the overpass, and add east facing ramps – we’ll also extend O’Shea Road, so it joins the interchange
  • install smart, on-road technology across the freeways and extend the lane-use management system to the Beaconsfield Interchange
  • build a shared walking and cycling path along O’Shea Road between Clyde Road, Berwick and the Princes Highway, Beaconsfield.

The Monash Freeway currently supports more than 470,000 trips on an average weekday. As Melbourne’s population continues to grow, the freeway and connecting roads cannot meet this increasing demand, which leads to congestion in peak periods, delays and accidents.

The project will transform journeys in Melbourne’s south-east by increasing capacity, upgrading interchanges and enhancing traffic technology. These upgrades will relieve congestion while also increasing the resilience and reliability of the network.

This next stage follows the successful completion of Stage 1 in June 2018 between EastLink and Clyde Road.

Major work on Stage 2 is due to begin in early 2020 and expected to be completed in 2022.
