Safer access to public transport in Derrimut

20 June, 2019Western Roads Upgrade

People living with disability in Melbourne’s west will have safer access between public transport and their workplace in Derrimut, with a new bus stop to open as part of the upgrade of Palmers Road.

Many employees from the Mambourin Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) take public transport to the Derrimut Drive warehouse and will benefit from the new bus stop on the corner of Australis Drive and Robinsons Road in Derrimut.

A new bus stop has been built as part of ongoing works to upgrade Palmers Road and install traffic safety barriers at the Boundary and Palmers Road roundabout.

People will now be able to use the Australis Drive bus stop as a safer option, with a signalised pedestrian crossing located close by.

The new bus stop is near the main entrance to the West Park Industrial Estate, a few minutes' walk from Mambourin and on the same side of the road.

Mambourin has been supporting people with disabilities for almost 50 years and offers employment opportunities and training, as well as a range of other support services and leisure and recreation activities.

Dozens of adults living with disability work in logistics, packaging and assembly jobs at the Derrimut warehouse.

Employees from Mambourin are being walked through the safer and improved access changes, while the upgrade of Palmers Road in Truganina continues to take shape.

The installation of concrete barriers at the Boundary and Palmers Roads roundabout will allow workers to swiftly and safely complete drainage works, ahead of the intersection upgrade.

This intersection is one of the many that will be improved along Palmers Road, which will have extra lanes added along a nine-kilometre stretch.

Two new lanes will be added in both directions between Princes Freeway and Sayers Road, one new lane will be added in both directions between Sayers and Boundary Road, and two extra lanes will be built both ways between Boundary Road and the Western Freeway.

As part of the upgrade, Palmers Road will be straightened at the Sayers Road intersection and a new overpass will be built to take the Federation Trail over Sayers and Palmers Roads.

This upgrade will improve journeys to and from two major freeways in the west and boost access to public transport, jobs, and community hubs.
