New lanes open on M80
More than 13 kilometres of new lanes between Sunshine Avenue and Calder Freeway are open on the M80 Ring Road to improve traffic flow and safety.
A three-kilometre section on the M80 Ring Road has been widened - from two to four lanes from Sunshine Avenue to the EJ Whitten Bridge and from three to five lanes across the EJ Whitten Bridge right through to the Calder Freeway.
The extra lanes are expected to cut up to 30 mins off peak hour journeys for the 200,000 drivers who rely on the M80 each day.
An innovative freeway management system was also installed as part of the upgrade. The new system includes overhead speed limits and lane use signs, ramp signals, CCTV and variable messaging signs to improve traffic flow and response times to incidents.
Nearly 1000 workers have worked across 675,000 construction hours to lay 60,000 tonnes of asphalt, 36,000 tonnes of concrete and 4000 tonnes of steel as part of the new, wider M80 Ring Road.
