We’ve added extra lanes to 24kms of the Tullamarine Freeway in each direction between the Bolte Bridge and Melbourne Airport.

Overview

We’ve added extra lanes to 24 kms of road in each direction between the Bolte Bridge and Melbourne Airport. We’ve also added extra lanes on the Bolte Bridge and a section of the West Gate Freeway eastbound between Bolte Bridge and Power Street.

When we separate traffic at major locations and upgrade interchanges, this will relieve much of the weaving and merging on the freeway that adds to congestion and crashes.

We’re in the process of installing a Freeway Management System on CityLink, the Calder and Tullamarine Freeways. This will include:

  • overhead electronic speed limit signs to communicate speed limits and lane availability
  • stop and go signals on entry ramps
  • variable messaging signs to notify road users planned changes and disruptions
  • CCTV cameras to track traffic and incidents.
