We’re upgrading major intersections on Hoddle Street and Punt Road to improve traffic flow.

Overview

From 11pm Sunday 19 May to 6am Friday 24 May, Swan Street will be closed to trams and other vehicles between Punt Road and Cremorne Street. We’ll do this, so we can safely build a new, twin-platform tram stop and upgrade overhead tram cables.

We’ll work around the clock to minimise the disruption to road users and residents.

Driving

If you drive on Swan Street, alternate routes through Richmond will be in place. There’ll be signs and detours in place to guide you. See detour maps below.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow 30 - 60 minutes extra travel time.

The total journey time for the detours inbound towards the city are approximately:

  • Swan Street to City - 30 minutes
  • Hawthorn to Olympic Boulevard via Alexandra Parade - 25 minutes
  • Hawthorn to Olympic Boulevard via Power Street - 30 minutes.

Please make sure you plan your journey and allow extra travel time to take the suggested detours.

The total journey time for the detours outbound towards Hawthorn are approximately:

  • Punt Road to Hawthorn - 25 minutes
  • St Kilda to Hawthorn - 40 minutes
  • Olympic Boulevard to Hawthorn - 25 minutes.

Please make sure you plan your journey and allow extra travel time to take the suggested detours.

Access to local businesses

Trading hours and access to local businesses will remain unchanged while we work.

Events

Events goers can still access Richmond’s sporting precinct via existing walking and cycling paths in the area. You can also still drive to the Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct from either end of Olympic Boulevard.

Trams and buses

The route 70 tram to and from the city will continue to run with some small changes. You’ll need to hop off the tram at Swan Street near Cremorne Street or AAMI Park and walk across Punt Road.

To avoid these changes, you can also catch the train between Flinders Street and Richmond Station.

Once works are finished, the tram stop in front of Richmond Station (stop 8) will be removed and all tram passengers will be able to use the new accessible tram stop (renamed Richmond Station - Stop 8).

The temporary bus stops on Punt Road will be in place until late 2019.

Walking and riding

You can still walk and ride through the area. Footpaths will remain open to pedestrians during this time. For your safety and to help us complete work on time, we’ll close the crossing on Swan Street at Punt Road.
