We’re adding extra lanes on Sunbury Road between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, adding traffic lights, new walking and cycling connections and building a new bridge over Jacksons Creek.

The journey so far

We first shared the proposed reference design and asked for your feedback in September 2018. We received more than 130 suggestions which resulted in changes to the design of the project. You told us that reducing congestion, planning for growth, protecting the environment, local access and safety were important to you.

In 2019 we door knocked residents, distributed project information and hosted a local community event to continue raising awareness of the upgrade and answer your questions.

As a direct result of your feedback we refined our proposed design to include:

  • introducing traffic lights instead of upgrading the existing roundabouts
  • a wider centre median north of Lancefield Road
  • accommodating the specific access needs of businesses where possible

Since June 2021, we've been working to determine the safest, most efficient way to deliver the project with the least impact to road users and local communities.

Since June 2021, we've been working to determine the safest, most efficient way to deliver the project with the least impact to road users and local communities.

We’re working with other Big Build projects and businesses operating in the area to coordinate activities and minimise disruptions wherever possible.

Site investigations underway

Before we start developing the detailed design for the project, we need to find out what lies beneath the ground.

Over the next few months, we'll be conducting detailed site investigations which involves digging small holes in the ground to test the project design. We will also be working closely with utility services providers to safely identify essential services including power, gas, communications, drainage, water, and sewerage.

This process also enables us to assess the existing pavement and surrounding ground conditions which will help to inform and progress the design of the new road.

During investigations, we’ll aim to minimise impacts to traffic by completing the work during off-peak periods. Occasionally this will require a lane closure and speed reductions.

Early works

From mid-November to mid-December, we’ll work at the entrance to the Hi-Quality Sunbury Eco-Hub (570 Sunbury Road) to upgrade the road surface and improve safety for all motorists.

We’ll build new pavement, drainage, and relocate essential utility services to upgrade the driveway for trucks entering and exiting this site, preventing mud and dirt being carried on to Sunbury Road.

Most of this work will take place on weekends, during off-peak times and some nights between 7pm and 6am.

Hi-Quality Sunbury Eco-Hub works

The Hi-Quality Sunbury Eco-Hub is introducing temporary traffic lights at the entrance to its facility which will remain in place until the permanent traffic signals are installed. Their works will involve laying traffic light cables, installing temporary traffic lights and poles, and resurfacing a small section of Sunbury Road.

What to expect

During both of these works there will be, at times:

  • lane closures and speed reductions,
  • some 24/7 works carried out over three weekends
  • noise from equipment and heavy machinery such as excavators and trucks
  • possible vibration and dust which we’ll closely monitor to ensure they’re kept to a minimum.

Please observe the signs for information about speed reductions and temporary traffic changes.

If you have any concerns about the potential impacts from these works, please contact us to discuss how we can help. For the latest disruptions visit Victoria’s Big Build.

Working together to build better connections

Significant growth is expected in the Sunbury and Diggers Rest region in the coming years. Upgrading Sunbury Road in advance of these developments will ensure the area is equipped to provide people with easier, quicker and safer access to and from the Sunbury town centre.

Several other Big Build projects are being delivered for the benefit of your community including the Sunbury Line Upgrade and the Gap Road Level Crossing Removal.

We’ll maintain a coordinated approach with these projects to minimise disruptions wherever possible. Delivering these projects in parallel will ensure benefits will be enjoyed sooner.
